The Old Hag

The Old Hag Syndrome is a sleep state that has effected people for years all around the world, including myself. I've had this happen around ten times so far throughout my life, each episode terrifying, leaving me to feel as if I might be dying. But how real is it? If there anything to it other than just a myth?

If you have experienced it, then you know what it's like to be in that half awake state and be paralyzed, feeling as if someone is holding you down, sucking the breath from you.

My last episode happened in my old house(the haunted one, see earlier blog post), it left me sleeping with the lights on at night, which I do to this day. Yup, I can't sleep in the dark anymore without feeling smothered.

I'm interested in hearing about other peoples experienced. If you have had The Old Hag, I'd like to read about how you dealt with it.

  1. It's not a myth - trust me. It happened to me at my mum's house and, like everyone else who's experienced this, I too felt a weight on my chest and found myself unable to move. It was the strangest feeling because obviously the first thing one would want to do would be to jump up and see what this thing is on your chest. And yet you're unable to. So I lay there, awake and utterly aware, unable even to call for my mum. I've had this experience four times all in my late teens. I'm now 39 and live in Hackney, East London (UK) but I've never forgotten it. I don't think anyone who's had this ever could. But who do you tell? You end up sounding mad. Plus - and this is what really freaked me out - I heard a horrible laughter the last time it happened. Like I've said, I was completely awake and the cackling I heard sounded both inside the room and out of it. Man oh man. I tell you. I never want to go through anything like that again.
