Memories of Halloween

From the smell of woodsmoke in the crisp night air, to the smell of the grease paint we used on our faces, these are just a few of the things that evoke memories of Halloween's past.
As a child, this was my second favourite time of year, the first being Christmas.
I remember getting out from school and literally running home to wolf down supper, just to get a head start on getting reading for trick-or-treating.
While some carried pillowcases for their loot, I always preferred a highly decorated plastic bag, making sure I had extras in my pocket if needed.
We'd run from door to door, talking amongst each other, figuring out which house was best to hit first.
There was a magic in the air and everything felt sinister. Back then I even remember looking at the night sky, thinking that I just might spot a witch gliding past the moon on her broom. Ghosts lurked everywhere, providing that extra thrill we all so desired.
These memories comfort me now, and I smile whenever this time of year comes around.

What memories do you have of Halloween?

  1. Great post, love!

I never trick or treated as a child (as far as I can remember), and have always disliked the occasion.
These days I disconnect the door bell and pull the curtains shut, then ignore any little buggers knocking. ;)

I know, I'm an old curmudgeon at times. :P
